So my Sunday School lesson this week (I teach 14-16 year olds) was quickly diverted to stories about Sergey. Most of the time I struggle to keep them from talking to their neighbor but this time was different -- you could have heard a pin drop. So as I was telling them several stories from the week I had an epiphany and this is what I told them:
You can choose to become a product of your environment or you can chose to control your environment. Sergey has been through a lot in his short lifetime and through all of his difficulties could have easily become a “product” of his environment but he chose the latter. He chose the right path with little direction. If we were only all more like Sergey and when we were put in difficult situations made similar decisions this world would be a better place and we would be on the road back to our Heavenly Father.
Their eyes were wide open and some of them wrote it down. I’m pretty sure this lesson stuck better than any discussion of Psalms
